MEDIA, PA – More than $62,000 in equipment grants have been awarded to local schools by the Office of Safe Schools in the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), Rep. Chris Quinn (R-Delaware) announced today. The grants were awarded to Garrett's Way Child Care and Learning Center, Saint Thomas the Apostle School, and Strafford Friends School.

“The safety of our children at school is of paramount importance,” said Quinn. “The types of equipment funded by this program are part of critical, front-line security measures.

The Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant for Equipment is to assist school entities for security planning, purchase of security-related technology. The equipment that may be purchased with grant funds includes protective lighting, surveillance equipment, special emergency communications equipment, electronic locksets, deadbolts and theft control devices, and training in the use of security-related technology.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Office for Safe Schools coordinates school safety and security programs, collects the annual school violence statistics, coordinates antiviolence efforts, and develops policies and strategies to combat school violence.

“I’m a parent,” said Quinn. “The thought of schoolkids, whether mine or anyone’s, being the victim of violence at school is unthinkable. I am grateful the children attending these local schools will benefit directly from this initiative.”
