Quinn Calls for Halt of Mariner East 2 Construction
8/13/2020
MEDIA – State Rep. Chris Quinn (R-Delaware) on Thursday called for a temporary halt of construction of the Mariner East 2 pipeline following recent reports of several leaks including drilling fluids that have leaked into Marsh Creek in Chester County.

“Once again, Sunoco’s irresponsibility has put public safety at risk and adversely impacted the drinking water of many local residents,” Quinn said. “This is beyond frustrating and we need to ensure public safety before drilling resumes.”

Quinn said a full and thorough investigation by the Department of Environmental Protection was appropriate at this time. In the past, Quinn has called for a moratorium on construction, but Gov. Tom Wolf, who has sole discretion on the continuation of construction, has repeatedly said that he will not stop this project.

“Unfortunately, my calls for strong action have fallen on deaf ears time and time again,” Quinn said. “The governor has refused to protect my constituents and our neighbors in southeastern Pennsylvania. The latest leaks are a clear and obvious result of the recent hurricane activity and with more hurricanes forecasted to touch land and impact our area, we need to halt drilling until proper protocols are put in place. Safe drinking water is a fundamental need for human life, and we must protect that precious resource, and a temporary halt to drilling is the quickest and best way to do that.”

Quinn said he has been encouraged recently in Harrisburg by his colleagues as they have passed a pipeline safety bill that he introduced. The bill is in the Senate and passage is expected this fall. The bill would enable local emergency services to access evacuation plans from pipeline operators to ensure better communication during an emergency.

“I have worked hard on pipeline safety in Harrisburg,” Quinn said. “In fact, I have introduced more pipeline safety bills than any of my colleagues in the House, on either side of the aisle. Unfortunately, Gov. Wolf has a lot of discretion when it comes to this pipeline and he is refusing to act in the interest of public safety.”
